Drink of the Day:

Tom and Jerry

  • 30 ml Dark Rum
  • 15 ml Brandy
  • Two Teaspoons of Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • Hot Water

Thoughts (Spoiler Alert):

So in the end, Sasakura really didn’t do anything to have caused a customer to die. I can understand why he feels responsible, but it’s not like he fueled his intentions. I don’t know how many depressed people go to bars, but if TV shows and movies are any indications of real life, then I’d say there’s quite a lot. Many people go to bars to get drunk and forget about their problems. The decision to end one’s life is a grave one, and I really don’t think a drink can change their minds. I completely agree with Miwa that Bartenders shouldn’t feel bad if a customer goes and kill himself the next day. It is in Sasakura’s character to feel bad about something like that though, so I’m not complaining about how the story is works. I just don’t like it overall.

Saskura mentioned that Tom and Jerry is named after Jerry Thomas, but that’s not what Wikipedia says. Here’s an excerpt from wiki: The name is related neither to the popular MGM cartoon nor to the earlier Tom and Jerry by Van Beuren Studio, nor to famous bartender “Professor” Jerry Thomas, the author of one of the first bartender’s guides, How to Mix Drinks (1862). Instead, it is a reference to Egan’s book, Life in London, or The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn Esq. and his Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom (1821), and the subsequent stage play Tom and Jerry, or Life in London (also 1821).

Another thing I didn’t like in this chapter is how Miwa acted. First of all, Miwa couldn’t keep her big mouth shut, and keep it a secret. Although Kitagata probably knew she would talk to Sasakura about it, and it would end up helping Sasakura in some ways. The part that I dislike most is how she reacted to hearing Sasakura’s story. Worrying is one thing, but shouting in the rain is just plain unnecessary.

Thanks for translating another volume! 🙂

BTW, what are the titles of the volumes? I can tell that v5 is One for the Road but I can’t read Japanese so I can’t figure out the other titles from the (very nice, thanks for including them) cover scans.

The title for volume 6 is “Cigar Smoke”, and volume 7 is “A Martini’s Expression”. Do you want the others as well?

Damn you Ryuu stop treating Miwa like a customer already!

This story is not at its best, and a bit forced, but as I shipped Miwa and Ryuu like crazy, I still feel it entertainment.

Thank you for your hard work.

SIgh… story was a bit forced, and I guess it was more about the bartender than the cocktail this time, as Tom & Jerry seemed to have nothing to do with the story itself, no backdrop or anything. But the last two pages were heartbreaking, with Sasakura standing in the rain…

Yea, I really didn’t like the Eden Hall arc much. The whole series didn’t pick back up for me until vol 10 or so.
