Bonbonzaka Koukou Engekibu – Completed
Well, I just uploaded the final chapters of Bonbonzaka Koukou Engekibu to Mangadex. It took me about 2.5 years to translate this entire manga. I honestly thought it would take longer (seeing how it took me 8 years to translate Bartender lol), but the pandemic helped speed things up a bit. I know the translation isn’t exactly perfect and some parts may sound weird, but I chose to keep the translation as close to the original as possible. This manga was one of the first mangas I read as a kid and I lost count how many times I read it. I sincerely hope that this manga will bring to others as much joy as it has to me.
I haven’t decided on a next project, but I want to try my hands on some other things. I will likely come back to scanlating something though. Many have requested that I translate the other Bartender series. I’ll take a look at those and see if they pique my interest.

Tokudaiji’s Costumes – None, just naked
Chapter started off strong. Hiromi goes above and beyond for a stupid gag, but somehow it was just hilarious to me. I also loved the bit with Narushisu. I thought it was a pretty original way to display “shock”, and it fits Narushisu perfectly. I think the bit after that where everyone “fainted” was blah though. The chapter ends strong as well, I always enjoy seeing Kurumi vs Hiromi, since you never know who comes up ahead with these two.

Tokudaiji’s Costumes – Dinosaur Trainer
Bonbonzaka has a few chapters where it has outrageous settings, and this is one of them. This is also one of Mr. Nadegata’s best inventions to date. I like how they didn’t focus too much on him, but used him as a plot device. I also think the author did a great job showing how each person would behave in that environment. A great chapter.

Tokudaiji’s Costumes – Naked Tengu
I’m not 100% sure, but I think this is the first chapter where Makoto did not show up at all! Hiromi also has a very small role. This chapter is very different from the others where it just focus on Shoutarou the whole way. It’s decent in terms of comedy, but I like the change of pace. We also see Kasuga and Koizou show up together. I always imagine that they are actually good friends, but we never get any sort of confirmation.

Usually when a new character is introduced, he/she will appear for 2-3 chapters straight, so it’s no surprise see Kurumi again. We get to learn more about the Tokudaiji family and also Kurumi’s motivations and aspirations. She’s the typical genius who’s constantly overshadowed by a greater genius. Luckily this isn’t a dark manga, otherwise we might see her really try to kill Hiromi lol

This chapter introduces Hiromi’s little sister, Kurumi. Avid readers should have no problems guessing that she is Hiromi’s sister after seeing her “ho ho ho ho” laugh and the crazy “kiss”. I think she’s a great addition to the manga. She’s able to match Hiromi in terms of craziness, but she’s also more innocent in some ways. She’s the best character to keep Hiromi “in check” when things get out of hand.

Tokudaiji’s Costumes – Orange, Grapes, Dead Frog
After 42 chapters, one of the girls is finally questioning whether Shoutarou is actually gay or not. I think the characters and situation are set up so it doesn’t feel THAT unnatural to not question this. Makoto saw Shoutarou and the president naked together, and Risa is a gigantic airhead. But even then, Shoutarou showed absolutely no affection towards the president so it makes sense for one of them to suspect.

A “basic” chapter that only involves the 3 main cast. It’s a good change of pace, and I think the author does a good job weaving the various story “types” together to keep things fresh.

Risa trying to make a move! But as expected, Tokudaiji doesn’t let her have her way. It’s always fun to see the two of them fight over Shoutarou, and I think that whole sequence is gold. I also love the opening gag where the couple from the previous chapter gets pranked again.

Two jokes I enjoyed in this chapter. The first is the beginning where the drama club confused the heck out of the couple on the beach with their emotion training. Sometimes when a gag manga runs on for a while, you stop noticing how weird the characters are. Pitting them against “normal” people is a great way to remind the readers we’re dealing with weirdos and also poke fun at them. The other joke I like is at the bedroom — liked all the male characters’ sleeping quirks.
