Bartender Chapter 57 – The Luck of Eden Hall (Part 2)

Like I said in my post for chapter 56, this story is one of my least favorite. I think the message it tried to send it sound, but the execution is terrible. There are just so many things wrong with this chapter alone that irks me, but first I want to talk about the morals of the story. The moral of this story is to always remember you’re past. Not saying you should remember the people who wronged you so you can someday exact your revenge, but it’s to not forget who you are or what you did to get to where you are today. I think this is a lesson that can only be learned with age. This concept is easy to convey in words, but I just don’t think it’s something that young people can truly feel. This story also encourages people to never give up, and to never think efforts are wasted. I believe that’s very true. It’s common for a person to try really hard but end up in failure; however, they still gained valuable experience from the whole process, and I think that’s what really counts. So overall, I think this story was a good idea, and it also contained great morals.
Now for the bad. So first of all, I think this chapter have one of the worst transitions between topics ever. There are about three parts that I feel Sasakura, Maki, and Natori’s conversation just “jumped”. It may not be fully noticeable if you read through it quickly, but since I have to translate, I read every dialog in detail. There are times that when I flipped the page, I thought I might’ve missed something, since the transition is almost non-existent. Second, the author tried too hard to link Edenhall with the two old guys. There were some farfetched connections in the past, so it wasn’t a total surprise, but Sasakura continues to mention how the fairies were “poor”. I did some brief searches, and I don’t see any mentions of those fairies being poor (I don’t think “fairies are poor” is a theme you would ever see…). I just don’t think it’s right to make up your own version of a legend just to fill a gap in the story. Lastly, the whole idea of a “bar’s clock” also annoyed me. The idea pretty much came out of nowhere, and it was only briefly mentioned without much explanation. I don’t think the author even needed that little idea to make the story work. Basically I think the whole chapter was very sloppy, and I think it killed a potentially great idea.

Thoughts (Spoiler Alert):
Another long story, this time it’s about Maki’s past. It’s definitely a sign that things are coming to an end at Eden Hall, and Sasakura will venture on to his next challenge. But before Sasakura leaves, we will finally find out why Maki is so stingy and what his purposes are for opening Eden Hall. I don’t like this story that much in general, but I think it was a necessary one.
There are some morals that I think this story conveys, but I want to hold off on talking about them until the story comes to a close.
This chapter proved to be difficult to translate (and I’m not sure if I chose the best words for some of the terms) because it talks about some old concepts that I just don’t know the translations to.
