Bartender Glass 145 – Bartender Akatsu Shinji (Part 2)

Drinks of the Day:

Blue Blazer

  • 60 ml Scotch
  • 60 ml Hot Water
  • Lemon Peel
  • Lit up Scotch and pour into Hot Water

Thoughts (Spoiler Alert):

This chapter had an enjoyable subject, flair bartending.  I’ve never been to a flair bar or seen any professional performances before, but it looks interesting.  I think there are far more “non-traditional” bars in American than Japan though.  Everywhere you go, the bars are loud, rowdy, and just a bunch of people trying to have a good time.  I think the author tried to make the distinction too black and white.  Even in earlier chapters, you see a lot of people go to Sasakura’s bar when they are happy or want to have a good time.

I also don’t really like the flow of both chapters.  There were a few chapters like this before, where the dialog just doesn’t fit right.  Feels like the author couldn’t find a better way to push the story along.  For example, it feels odd to me that Akatsu would comment on Sasakura’s lack of flair bartending experience.  They were having a good talk about traditional bars vs flair bars, and boom, he just suddenly made that comment.  Another instance is where Akatsu just goes off on a rage and make a 2-handed Blue Blazer.  Then he immediately looks calm again.  It’s not like Sasakura screwed up or anything.  No reason to get angry and be insulted.

I think that Akatsu might have flew off the handle because he interpreted Sasakura’s choice of drink as a slight against him. Then again that’s only my personal thoughts on it.
