Bartender Glass 134 – Bartender’s Qualification

Drinks of the Day:

Boccie Ball

  • 30 ml Amaretto
  • 30 ml Orange Juice
  • Soda Water

Thoughts (Spoiler Alert):

Another chapter that I did not quite like.  The new guy, Kakuda, had too many weird statements that never really made sense.  For example, the conversation about his father, and also the fact that he went from “I don’t have time to think about stuff like this …” to looking like he’s really happy about the drink Tsubasa made him.  At first, they looked like plot devices that can be explored in the future, but (unless I’m mistaken) this guy never appears for a second time.  I’m also not a fan of the pace.  This chapter moved too fast, and it was hard to figure out what is going on.  For example, in the beginning, Keiko makes a joke about Kakuda’s food choice, then he downs his drink (a small frame showing that), and then Keiko makes a convoluted statement about meeting classmates in court, and then Kakuda gets the conclusion of “don’t let your guard down”…. Okay… I thoroughly confused the first few times I read this.  I just don’t see how the conversation can proceed like that.  The manga expected you to have this thought process: 1) Keiko makes a joke about Kakuda’s food choice, 2) Kakuda, annoyed by Keiko, downs his drink, 3) Keiko sees this and thinks this is inappropriate, and warns Kakuda that we may meet other lawyers present at this mixer in court, so don’t do that, 4) Kakuda tries to figure out why Keiko made this warning, and thinks it’s because he shouldn’t drink too much and give the other lawyers a chance to pry information from him.  All this jam packed into a little over a page is just too much.  This is going to happen more and more often as the series continue too.  The main reason why I disliked the later chapters.

thanks for continuing to post bartender scanlations. 🙂 i’ve really enjoyed your work and appreciate all the effort you put into this. it is sad to see the manga ending with the classic “well we have to wrap up the manga so let’s have an ending that makes no sense and feels hurried”, but it’s the fate of all great manga. i don’t know why mangaka and their publishers/editors can’t seem to find graceful ways to end a story. i imagine there are interesting angles to this, cultural, anthropological, and economic. perhaps someone will explore these one day.
