Bartender Chapter 51 – Summer . Taste of the Second Glass

Oops, forgot to change this part.  But I started using MediaFire now due to demand.  Uploading does seem more intuitive than Megaupload.  Hope this is good news for everyone.

Thoughts (Spoiler Alert):

More buildup to the upcoming competition, and Sasakura became more involved as well.  He is given the sacred task of picking a bartender for Kurushima’s new hotel.  I believe it’s the same hotel that started this whole series (where Miwa’s manager initially tried to find a bartender).  The story has made plenty of progress since it started 7 volumes ago, and this is one thing I really like about Bartender.  Although there are many isolated chapters that doesn’t do much for the story overall, the author never allow the story to stand at one point too long.  He also try to create new circumstances so the story doesn’t become boring.  Even the people around them continuously evolve.  In contrast, one manga that I really liked, but completely stopped reading is Detective Conan (Case Closed in US).  The series lasted so long, the tricks have started to become lame.  Some are outright impossible or are reused.  And yet, after so many years (about 20 now), the story hasn’t progressed all that much.

Sasakura made a good point (although Miwa’s grandfather rejected his idea) about bars in hotels vs bars on the streets.  Although both are bars, they serve different purposes, have different scales, so it makes sense for the bartenders to act differently.  The key here is to adapt.  Most of the adaptation mentioned before are on a smaller scale.  Sasakura would often think about (and he did so in this chapter too) how to make the cocktail just right for the customer.  But aside from adapting a drink to each customer, a bartender need to adapt how he works depending on the environment.

Lastly, Miwa’s grandfather revealed that he doesn’t have much time left, though he quickly changed the subject.  I’m surprised Sasakura didn’t catch on to that.  I thought with his keen observation skills, he would’ve spotted that and realize something is wrong.  It would’ve made more sense for the author to have used a more subtle way to show that something is wrong with Miwa’s grandfather.  Sasakura not picking up on something like this is just too unlike him.

Question of the Day:

Sasakura needs to pick a bartender from the competition, and he’s already set on picking either Kyouko or Yuri.  Who do you think he should pick and why?

Thanks for the new chapter, mediafire is indeed good news, for me at least.
I think Sasakura should choose Yuri, I think she is currently the more suitable for the job. Aside for her gloomy personality she proved herself to be very skilled and already got a good insight about caring to the details for the customers sake, but she is also driven by the strong desire of growing up to make her own bar and that could give her extra concentration to not screw up. Kyouko on the other hand is still working on the basics and until now she didn’t prove herself to be the type who learns fast so I don’t think that letting her do a job that requires a skilled enthusiastic and caring bartender as Miwa’s grandfather asked would be a good idea. But maybe it will simply be neither of them and the story will move on from that point, after all Miwa’s grandfather also said he was already thinking about someone and we have no idea who this person might be.
About Sasakura, well… as you pointed out the author didn’t make Miwa’s grandfather show any sign of illness so it’s not that strange Sasakura didn’t took his words as “I’m dying” or something like that, even we are just speculating about that.
What I didn’t understood was his reaction when asked to serve a mojito, why the serious face and why the hurry to do it without changing. Maybe he got that something was wrong and tried to understand what it was exactly.
For all the episode Sasakura remarked many times that he is a little biased about how old men are unreasonable and considering that many old men are used to talk about how they feel their life won’t last long he could’ve be misled by his own judgement, thinking he was concerned about the service in his hotel. And that is, in my opinion, very human.

I think he should choose third option:someone else.
Kyouko still needs experience and skills.
Yuri lacks the skill to insight into customer’s thought and console him/her.

As for Miwa’s grandfather: he isn’t sick, he is simply old.
He is afraid of that the next day could be his last.

The only thing I’m sure about is that unless Kyouko changes completely from what she is now, she should not get it. She is all about technique, and even then it’s not the best (See the Gimlet chapter). She doesn’t seem to learn well, as after so many chapters of talking with Sasakura she STILL hasn’t realized anything yet abou the art of bartending.

Yuri…she wouldn’t be bad. I’m reserving judgement cause she doesn’t have enough airtime yet, but from what i see technique wise she’s decent, good enough for the bar. It shows that she learns a bit, so a few more chats with Sasakura will change her enough to be good for the bar. What they SHOULD do is ask Bar…errr…the super service oriented one, for the main guy under the master. With the master’s permission of course.
