All right, a new release in less than 2 weeks! Haven’t done that in a while, hope everyone can enjoy this chapter.

Drink of the Day:

Gin Tonic (Sasakura Style)

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 5 oz Tonic Water
  • 1 Lime Peel

Note: Squeeze lime peel hard to add bitter flavor. Bend lime peel to let it’s fragrance stick to the ice.

Thoughts (Spoiler Alert):

This is a comedic chapter where the author placed lots of humor and at the same time tried to teach the readers something about bartenders.  I really like these chapters, since I’m not fond of reading about broken souls and how they are healed.  I personally enjoy comedy a lot more than drama, so I enjoyed this chapter a lot.  The old man seemed like someone important, who defined himself as Eden Hall’s competition.  But in the end, he doesn’t even own a bar, but a food stand.  I really liked the flow of the story, and it’s great to see the author bring back old characters.  Kawakami’s brief appearance and Miwa’s reaction were subtle yet telling.  Perhaps we will see some love triangle forming in the future?  I won’t spoil it for the rest of you though. hahaha.  The only downside is Sasakura’s explanation as to why he apologized to the old man.  I had to read it 3-4 times to really understand what he’s saying, but even now, I’m not 100% sure.  I think Sasakura apologized because even though he kept customers entertained with his cocktail making, he was unable to chat with the old man since it was so busy.  The old man tried to ask Sasakura about the drink, but he had to tend to other customers.  Reading through it the first time, I really didn’t make that connection, since it was a bit too subtle to me, and Sasakura’s talk about how “his skills are there for the customer” made me scratch my head even more.   But I think I got it now.  If someone have another explanation, please feel free to post it in the comments below.

Pretty simple explanation, IF you are asian… curteousy and “service” are very important in our culture, especially so for people like a bartender. To Be so abrupt to a customer, to have him ask you a question and halfway answer him and then ignore him, was “poor service”. Also, in Japanese culture, it is unseemly to show “poor competence” in front of important guests. For instance, a waitress dropping a teacup 3 tables away from the Prime Minister’s table might require an apology from the manager. Sasakura was not just “busy”. He was “unable to handle all his customer’s needs”. It might not be his fault(he’s only 1 man), but yet, it is sort of his fault(so hire some help or something), so it’s quite correct for him to apologise.

To clarify: Sasakura’s apology is because he was unable to give perfect service and atmosphere and etc to his customers that day. The reason might be seen to be because the place was too busy that night, BUT Sasakura is also saying (in typical japanese humility) that the failing lied with himself for not being fast enough at preparing the drinks. (etc)

      Thanks for the explanation 🙂
I thought Sasakura’s apology may have to do with the fact that he allowed the old man to leave without paying. It was his fault that the old man left without paying, even though that’s not his intention, but it was Sasakura’s job to stop him.
