Thoughts (Spoiler Alert)
There were lots of problems in this chapter, some of which I addressed in the scanlation, but I’ll talk about them here too. First of all, the author screwed up on how to take a Tequila shot. Lime is last, not first. It’s almost common knowledge here in America, not sure how it is in Japan, but I have to say I’m disappointed that he made such a fundamental mistake. Also, that method did not originate from Mexico. This one I don’t hold too much against him, since I didn’t know either until I read it on wiki. But I really hope he could be giving some reliable information in this manga.
The story itself was touching once again. It teaches us that there’s no such thing as a pointless life. Shimaoka started to regret living the way he did, and believed he could’ve been happier if he had continued to act and be with Yuzuki Mieko. But Sasakura, though young, is experienced in guiding people to face their problems. And he is also knowledgeable enough to find a liquor and story which fits Shimoka’s circumstance. This brings me to my next point. It’s weird how that seemed to be the first time Sasakura met Shimaoka. If Shimaoka is a regular, Sasakura should’ve already met him before.
Question of the Day
Do you regret that life that you have lived and what would you do differently if you had the choice?

I believe the correct term is psychological advertising
Thanks
Always nice to learn a new thing or two
thanks for the scan
thanks for the scans! i really enjoy reading this.
Thanks for the scanlation.
In Spain we do drink tequila in that order. First bite the lemon, second the salt and then the tequila and I guess in South America at least it’s the same… The thing it’s that people drink the tequila in many ways and it might not be the predominant way. Margaritas are also often serve das a reference drinks in Mexican restaurants. I felt you excesively criticised the mangaka in this issue. He’s just a man that probably didn’t know his alcohol that well before starting this manga and I think a little leeway should be had.
Thanks for the additional information on Tequila. It’s interesting to know that Tequila shots can be taken that way. I will try that next time
I admit my criticism is harsh, but that’s because I believe providing the correct information is important in this kind of manga. I wouldn’t mind seeing some flaws and errors in mangas geared towards a younger age group, but Bartender targets an older audience, and I would like to see the mangaka to spend a little more time on research. Another problem I did not mention in my post is that the mangaka did not use the word “Slammer”, he called it “Shotgun”.
I’m gonna have to agree with Yukimi here, you were a bit too harsh, especially considering that the ‘issues’ you bring up are mostly misses on your part, not the mangaka ;>.>
1: Slammer vs. shotgun
In Japan, that way of drinking it is called a “tequila shotgun”, not a “tequila slammer.” He didn’t make a mistake, it simply has a different name in Japan. It comes from that if you don’t hold your hand properly over the glass, it will spray out, kinda like when firing a shotgun (all the small pellets flying every which way), rather than a “slammer” because you slam it onto the counter.
2: Higashiyama vs Saitou
The bar has been called Higashiyama (as has the master) ever since it was introduced in volume 3. The English wiki writes it “Saito” because it only references the anime which had reversed the kanji that made up the name; so instead of 東山 (higashiyama), like it should be, the anime had it as 山東 (saitou). So Saitou is incorrect, Higashiyama is correct.
3: Mexican style of drinking
Ryuu doesn’t say “this is the Mexican style of drinking“, he says “this way of drinking is called ‘Mexican style’“. Again, this is simply the Japanese name for having a tequila shot with salt and lime; they called it the “Mexican style”.
4: Wrong order
In Japan, the proper order of drinking a tequila shot (*aka* “Mexican Style”) is biting the lime (or lemon) first, licking the salt next, then drinking the tequila last. (explained here: http://www.hanae.ne.jp/sake/unchiku/tequila.htm )
So this might sound a bit mean, and I’m really sorry, but perhaps you were a bit quick on the draw when you said it was the mangaka who should be spending a little more time on research… ^^’
You were right about the math though, that was def. a miss on his side. But anyway, now you know, ya~? 8D
So maybe make corrections and re-upload or write an apology note to the mangaka in the next issue or something?
Hi Hecko, thanks for taking the time to elaborate on all those items. I certainly jumped the gun this time. And thanks for clarifying on #2. I will start using Higashiyama from now on. I’m actually not too sure on how re-uploading a chapter would work… The only place I actually upload to is MangaHelpers and Megupload. OneManga, MangaFox, and the other manga sites all take it from MangaHelpers I believe. But would they bother re-uploading on their side if I perform a re-upload on MangaHelpers??
@Cityshrimp: No worries ^^
Sorry again if it sounded mean though.
And I don’t really know if people will bother re-uploading them on other sites as well, if you post a corrected version on Mangahelpers, but they might. I mean, out of 1500 or so readers, one is bound to do it, especially if you ask for it to be done in the release notes, ya?
I didn’t want to create drama. BTW, I was in Japan two years ago and in Odaiba apart from what I skimmed through your article there’s the shonen jump shop and one of the most amazing tokyo termal waters hotsprings (You know, onsen) it was very cool with different type of waters (coffee, fruit ones), different temperatures, shops and was pretty cheap for a good onsen and they make group discounts if you are tne people (you need to convince them thoguh
).
Thank you very much for the new chapter!
Another great translation, good work! I thought the word for “slammer” was “shotgun” because it was in the anime and I’ve heard of people “shotgunning” a glass (shotgunning a beer can is different). I’m not a drinker though, so I can only say what I’ve seen and heard from people and media.
This manga is geared towards an older audience and this chapter can be used as evidence since it says that you can lead a meaningful life without following your dreams, while shounen anime/manga (FMA, Naruto, Yugioh) have the opposing view.
First, i must congratulate you for yout scalations.
I’m mexican just adding a little tid bit of info, the “slammer” in Mexico is called “Martillo” (Hammer). And, we drink Tequila with salt and sour lemon, the order is no always the same, it depends on the one drinking, some people like to “smooth their throats” before the drink so they take the lemon and salt before, other like to take it after, and other (like me) drink it before and after. XD
Drinking Tequila with salt and lime is NOT a Tequila Slammer (which happens to be a cocktail).
As for the order you’re supposed to lick, drink, bite in, it really depends where you are at however I’ve mostly seen it in the order stated above.
Anyway regarding Ryuu not knowing Shimaoka, I believe he just became a bartender at Bar Higashiyama and doesn’t know all of the regulars yet, I believe Shimaoka even asks Ryuu if he’s new there.
Great scanlation keep it up!
Thank you for another awesome chapter.
The anime of this chapter did a really good work too. Maybe it’s because the origin story is moving enough.
